Aloha Everyone,

It was the lack of healthcare on Maui that moved me to run for state senate.   However, there are other problems that we are facing here on Maui and in Hawaii in general.

Maui needs new hospitals. Our government-run hospital is poorly equipped, offers few services  and is lacking in educational offerings for the staff.  As a registered nurse and co-founder of Association for Improved Healthcare on Maui, I have been working with AIHM’s 3000-plus members to bring a hospital to South Maui in addition to supporting efforts to bring a new hospital to the Westside. We need to keep Maui's medical dollars and good jobs here on Maui. Maui's healthcare is in crisis and I promise to make it my first priority.

As your Senator I will vote to abolish the State’s “Certificate of Need” process which gives government the final say on new medical facilities. We need market driven supply and demand to regulate businesses, including hospitals.

As a small business owner, I have often paid more in taxes than I earn in profits.  I will work to cut your taxes and make government more efficient.  Hawaii is 4th highest in our state and local tax burdens as compared with other states.  I will vote against tax increases.

Education is a priority for me.  I also support our public charter schools and believe that they need equal funding to the traditional public schools. We need local school boards. Money must reach our children in the classrooms. Our teachers deserve a salary that represents the level of importance their jobs and commitment represent. They are shaping our future.

Our school campuses need improvement.  Many are old and have much needed repairs.

I support and encourage growth of Maui Community College and will be instrumental in assisting in it's maturity into a 4 year university. This will create more opportunities for young people and adult students. It will serve as an incubator for a diversified economy.

I will work to complete the Lahaina Bypass, other road projects including the Pali issue, basic county infrastructure, including our water supply.

We must stop dumping millions of our tax dollars into government hospitals.  We would have money for our schools and roads if we allow private hospitals to take over our hospitals.

Education and medicine can be drivers of a new Maui economy. An economy which would preserve our island lifestyle and make us less dependent on tourism.  As your next Senator I intend to make that a reality.
